In the 2000's, The Bravery recorded The Sun and The Moon, and released what I believe to be one of the strangest and most emotionally fascinating albums I've heard. Every song was recorded twice. The Sun version is bright, rousing, and outgoing. The Moon version is haunted, nocturnal, lonely.

Both versions have the same lyrics, and mostly the same composition, but the feeling is completely different. And the lyrics are amazing. One of my favorite lines: “Whenever I think back on the best days of my life I think I saw them all on TV I am so homesick for someplace I’ve never been”

In the post 9/11 musical period, The Bravery predicted the emotional texture of modern life many years early. Mediated memories. Nostalgia for imaginary lives. Feeling displaced from your own existence. They captured it all, and more. Go give it a listen, you won't regret it.

Addendum: maybe I'm just speaking from nostalgia for the music I grew up listening to, but I feel like that post 9/11 wave of music was especially good... it was real, and it talked about real subjects, and it still stands especially strong today, two decades later.
