It felt more like a season of standalone episodes than a series, if that makes sense. Yes, there was character development but no overarching plot arc. Also, as it serves as a prequel to TOS, there's no genuine peril when known characters are put in harm's way, which lowers the emotional stakes.

Yes, it’s a very retro style of storytelling. And, on the other hand, I am constantly worried about the “new” characters’ safety.
