Buf's linter has been pretty great. I do, however, maintain two separate rulesets for the linter since some things we can't reasonably change after the fact. But we do follow all the default rules on new Protobuf files

I use buf format, both in vscode with the buf plugin and in CI (because you can't trust everyone has the same editor setup 😉)
