is atproto secretly an icann project to sell more domains

also if I got my own gTLD, and put the TXT record at the tld level (which should be possible as far as I know), would bsky let me take a single word handle?

No, according to current Handle Specification: "bare" top-level domains are not allowed as handles, even if valid "hostnames" and "DNS names." (atproto.com/specs/handle)
