In the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) tradition, an eagle keeps watch atop the Great Tree of Peace, vigilant against threats to peace. Beneath the tree, weapons are buried. Its branches offer shelter to all who seek peace.

There is wisdom in that symbolism, and perhaps a question worth asking as we contemplate what to build at Memorial Circle: Why celebrate war and conquest? Why not a Tree of Peace? If we keep celebrating war, we will forever be a people at war.
