i gotta ruminate on this idea for a little while, but after bursting into tears multiple times this week due to fiction featuring bad parents/parenting, i think i gotta continue to consume these stories so i never forget what it felt like to be a powerless child at the hands of a capricious parent.

they don't even need to be abusive, just "parents" as a structure. i'm trying to read Girl's Girl by Sonia Feldman and it's great, but Mina's mom is being destructive to her relationship with Mina because she's like "i must do What Is Right" instead of actually seeing her daughter in front of her.

Mina comes to celebrate something wonderful and the mom zeroes in on a stupid aspect of the story and is like "i gotta blow up your life and punish you, sorry not sorry." awful, destructive, deeply unkind. i had to turn the audiobook off and probably won't return, because i _hate_ that shit.

i regret every day that i didn't physically fight my parents when i was young. they deserved to get beat up, and i was strong and spry. even if i'd lost, they would know. now we're all old and the chance for catharsis is gone
