SBU’s “Alpha” unit struck the Russian shadow fleet tanker QENDIL in the Mediterranean using precision drops. At the time of the operation the ship was empty, posing no environmental threat. QENDIL suffered critical damage and is no longer operational.

Please repeat this over and over again. (Ust-Luga is near St Petersburg) 👇 "Overnight on August 24, the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces struck the Ust-Luga sea terminal used by Russia to circumvent international sanctions as well as several other logistic facilities of the Russian forces."

It absolutely DOES pose an environmental threat! bsky.app/profile/andy...

"Posing no environmental threat" is simply not true. The Aframax class crude oil tanker #Qendil was clearly not carrying cargo. But it still has capacity to carry between 2,800 tonnes and 4,300 tonnes of Bunker C heavy fuel oil. If at 20% of capacity, that's 560-860 tonnes of oil spill.

1) The treat level is much less compared to the treat that the rushists are posing to the world and the environment. If there will be a spill, which it didn't happen yet because Ukraine is taking care in avoiding hitting loaded tankers, it will be minor compare to 100 000 + tonnes of an oil tanker.

Yeah. Must agree. A waring Russian petro state is the planet’s biggest obstacle to environmental reform. The war itself is polluting in unacceptable ways. Russia even attacked Chernobyl. Russia must be defeated before environmental reform can take root.

You are right.. however I think the risk was minimalized to the smallest extent by hitting only the equipment atop the deck and choosing not to strike the hull or attempt to sink the vessel. The ship is still seaworthy yet will be inoperational for oil transport indefinitely Im sure.

I agree it "could" be repaired.. but depending on the age/ condition of the ship it may not be feasible. Many of those shadowfleet vessels are rust buckets and barely seaworthy. Add a bunch of damage to them and the cost of the repairs could surpass the value of the ship. This one took several hits.

The really cool thing is that these strikes cost close to nothing, but raises the cost for all russian transport. The owners of these tankers are going to ask for much more money, which increase the cost for ALL trading, included tankers not attacked. Its a really effective pressure point.
