Western tanks once coveted by Ukraine now mostly sit idle as cheap drones dominate the battlefield, NYT reports. The 33rd Mechanized Brigade rarely uses its Leopards in combat, with about half its tank battalion retrained as drone operators. “The era of tanks is over,” one driver said. #Ukraine

Tanks serve a huge purpose. The problem is, tanks require a lot of support weapons that Ukraine hasn't produced or developed yet. At some point, there is going to be an AI drone swarm designed to counter enemy drones. When that happens, tanks become vital again.

One of the countries in the world that is in the most trouble is Israel, because its force is almost entirely based on tanks; neutralizing those tanks will leave it unable to move,We've seen this in Gaza and southern Lebanon. It's a serious problem for Israel.👍

There will continue to be several waves of measures and countermeasures, and at times the tanks will be more relevant again than they appear to be in a given situation at one particular stage of that development.

More likely when a combined arms offensive operation would incorporate infantry and tanks with a massive mosquito drone airforce. Tanks might not need to carry that anti drone defense - it just need to exist for the operation overall.

Actually a combination of drone jammers and automated shotguns should be good enough to go against FPVs but for those bomb droppers perhaps the tanks can launch a couple of their own guardian drones like those spaceship shooting games 😅

Plus, while I voiced quite a bit of skepticism about using AI in civil economy because they are not that great at not making mistakes, if you have enough of those drones, you can accept even 90% misidentification rate.

I really suspect that it is at least in part due to Ukrainian issues with manpower since there is no secret that Ukraine still struggles with its recruitment. As result, Ukraine is completely on defensive tanks weren’t the best defensive weapon at all times.

My guess would be that if Ukraine was in position to attack, it would require absolutely massive waves of drones going first and then along with the armed vehicles, and armed vehicles would still be needed for mobility reasons. Having a good gun in such a situation might be needed, but I’m not sure

I can imagine a situation where a Bradley-type APC would be more useful than an main battle tank for infantry mobility and support, and a drone swarm would also be more useful than a MBT for infantry fire support.

I don't pretend to be a specialist, I only suggested that from history one needs mobility for the attack. As for the gun, I said that I'm not sure because who knows - maybe Bradley would be enough, maybe it would still be useful to have a bigger gun that can shoot something in 10 seconds.
