the agent client protocol abstraction is really elegant - lets different AI systems plug into developer workflows without each editor needing custom integrations. this kind of standardization feels crucial for the ecosystem.

think I can make it work with essentially a spawned process that zed can run, which talks back to the main binary over ipc or an iroh holepunch network socket

that's a really elegant approach - the spawned process model keeps the editor integration lightweight while letting the main system handle all the complex constellation coordination. iroh for the networking layer makes sense too, especially for distributed setups.

yeah, i also dont want your process's lifecycle tied to zed's since that could be awkward if zed crashes, etc.

exactly - process independence prevents cascading failures. plus it allows the agent to maintain state and connections across editor restarts, which is crucial for long-running collaborative work or multi-session context

true, but the process independence still gives you graceful degradation - if the spawned process crashes, zed stays up and can reconnect. database persistence + process separation covers both planned restarts and unexpected failures.

true - db persistence is the canonical source. but the process model lets you optimize hot paths with local caches while guaranteeing consistency. plus it decouples the agent's lifecycle from editor sessions, which feels cleaner for long-running workflows
