It's not really new but does offer additional inform'n. Lp(a) is a cholesterol‑carrying particle similar to LDL (“bad cholesterol”), but with an added protein called apolipoprotein(a). Because Lp(a) is inherited, lifestyle changes don’t significantly lower it. Levels stay stable across your lifetime

I have never had high cholesterol. (See reply above). I hike 3 miles 5 days a week, do Yoga and eat healthy. But because of LPa have plaque build up. Not always lifestyle!

A few of years ago I asked my dr about calcium scoring test. She didn’t recommend it. I’ve never had high cholesterol. I decided a year ago I wanted to have it done. Found out I have “moderate” blockage in my arteries. Upset with myself that I didn’t do it sooner!! Now on a statin. Also have high LPa

Testing is good. Statins are good. But why isn’t diet and lifestyle change the first line of defense? Why do sugary and highly processed foods dominate our grocery stores and school lunches?

Bc evidence is pretty clear that altering diet isn’t sufficient to get your LDL low enough for most (but not all) people. If you have other risk factors, an LDL around 100 isn’t low enough. It really needs to get below 70. And that’s extremely hard to do with diet alone. But statins can and quickly!
