This is one of the most egregious things I've ever read. We have lost all humanity. Imagine being a cancer patient in a clinical trial and people are betting against your survival.

Because it IS ghastly. I genuinely do not understand American media's inability to make conclusions that may alienate some people who don't read their articles or at all.

The development of drugs could not be more perversely profit driven by ghouls already. NPR is just mad middle class bros will now be part of the game the rich always have been.

I don't understand the outrage over this. Yeah betting is scummy across the board, but is betting on clinical trial outcomes any worse than betting on election or sports outcomes?

Betting on clinical trial results is already legal and accepted in the form of long or short buying the stock of the company developing the treatment. I think the only unethical aspect would be if someone cheats on or sabotages the trial, and the general public isn't in a position to do that.

So, we’ve reached the point in the fall of civilization where a gambling addict is going to murder a few cancer patients to make sure p isn’t < 0.05.

This is horrifying. A loved one is receiving an experimental drug right now. What if a member of his medical team is a gambling addict and tampers with his medication to their favor?
