In the 70's the nun who was the principal of the Catholic school I attended had a collection of over a dozen paddles of various shapes and sizes. She took great pleasure in selecting a paddle and savagely beating kids as young as 8 nearly daily. People are terrible, in aggregate. Monsters.

Really the simplest solution is to punish the parents for teaching children that misbehavior is acceptable Sure we'd all be mentally broken with guilt but if so much as cussing cost the family a week's wages we'd probably get in the habit of behaving better (at least in public)

I can’t think of a better way to teach bullying others as the best way to get compliance. Can you? Why not make a federal law that mandates stoning offensive children to death? Would solve lot of problems, no? We would lose half our future politicians right out of starting gate. Do as I say or die.

As someone who received it… The lack of trust for adults never leaves you. Also, the problem with that kind of punishment is that so many of them are taking their life anger out on a child, and it has nothing to do with a child or with a child did.

My parents had one that hung next to my room for easy access. They got a kick out of pretending to hit me with it too, which turns out does the same thing to a child’s brain as if you actually hit them

I, and a couple of my friends, were butt-paddled by our 4th grade principal (public school, Northridge, Ca!), and it seemed he took some particular pleasure in it. While some can dubiously debate the effectivity of such measures, I'd like to add that there's a child sexual abuse factor at play
