One frequent argument I hear about privacy stuff like this is that "They'll arrest you anyway!", but I think an important point to take away is that the potential for them to maybe plant that evidence on his phone was also eliminated. You don't know which cops are crooked until it's too late.

If you are at all any kind of political activist, you should protect yourself from the unlikely worst case, because once you're in a cell, you can't retroactively protect your privacy. Your level of exposure to bad actors is now fixed.
