i’m tired of every paper (even critical ones) on societal impact of AI starting by both-siding the “benefits” and risks/harms of AI in academia, i would like us to arrive at a collective reckoning that we don’t need to play both sides. it's totally legit to clearly state just the harms. period

too tired to engage directly but "other fields have to balance both sides" replies need to imagine a world in which a paper starting with "tobacco is known to benefit x,y, &z while it also poses risks to lung cancer" is acceptable

Wasn't that like half the papers about tobacco use back in the day? I remember jokes about that, but they could just be jokes.
