A few years ago I was discussing with three or four colleagues (all Italians, and all CS, needless to say) and they were telling me how one of the goals of the EU is or should be replacing all national languages with English, and that the preservation of endangered languages is a waste of money.

Except that literal fascists cared (in their own twisted way, of course) or pretended to care about the Italian language and Italian culture.

Coloniser mindset requires everybody to have 1) no languages separate from the state's and 2) to centrally control language. As a speaker of a language we were not allowed to use in school: massive solidarity.

This was emotional both as a diasporic Cypriot and as having left Cyprus at 18 — esp near the end hearing that certain Cypriot linguist academics in Cyprus hate our language so much they want to see it die and be replaced with Modern Greek. Makes sense as we were/are not taught it at school...
