Can you expand on how you do this in practice, blog.exe.dev/talk-emoji suggests you have bots in slack, do you just limit them to certain channels?

Yes limit channels. Our bots either mostly post in ‘news’ or respond to various actions (threads seem fine if invoked explicitly) or comment on other bots (eg investigating an alert).
