maybe my repo gets in a messed up state because I use the same checkout for gotip (which invokes git) as well. the only reason I use git-codereview is to kick off trybots from the cli, I should look into doing that with plain git

What is “messed up”? Are you using gotip to download unsubmitted CLs? If so, you are probably running into the issues I mention in the downloading CLs section.

probably jj losing track of commits, but tbh I don't really remember, just that I really shouldn't interleave git with jj (which I learned again at work using GitHub too...)
