I'm not sure that conservatives were ever "free market advocates", not since the 80's at least.

But this is what they've wanted - an unregulated "free" market. In no scenario does the consumer ever win when the markets are "free." Even the butcher in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" tried to put his thumb on the scale to charge the consumer more for meat.
