A reminder on Indigenous Peoples' Day: Native people are incarcerated in state and federal prisons at more than 4x the rate of white people. This is the direct result of centuries of oppression and theft from Native people.

Native women are particularly overrepresented in the incarcerated population: ➡️ 3% of incarcerated women in the U.S. are Native, despite Native women making up just 1% of the total U.S. female population.

Their overincarceration is another maddening aspect of our nation’s contributions to human rights crises facing Native women, including the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) and high rates of sexual and other violent victimization.

The alarming reality is that little data overall is available on the incarceration of Native people. But from the data that does exist, what's clear is that, like so many other parts of the U.S. government, the criminal legal system continues to target & fail Native people.
