One expert said punitive policies on homelessness make unhoused people more invisible, eroding public compassion. “It’s just sweeping human beings under the rug, without regard to their humanity, without regard to what really happens to them.” By @nicolesantacruz.bsky.social

That adage comes to mind of insanity is to keep doing the same things and expecting different outcomes. Good work by Nicole Santa Cruz on this story

"We are making many suffer for the whims of a deeply unwell few, and they are unwell indeed" - the sick of greed rich, that turned basic human neccesity into object of financial speculation and in result made it harder to obtain and keep by normal people? I agree, great observation mister Trump.

The next step is making homelessness illegal. Then, when you're in jail, you'll be leased out by the for-profit prison industry to employers for slave labor. This is what will happen to immigrants as well. And who else?

Blindly assuming every single homeless person doesn't want help is part of the whole issue. That mindset causes the vicious feedback loop to continue, and nothing gets done. Even the most healthy minded can become homeless, and those who think otherwise are using baseless strawman arguments.

Notice how I said "stay homeless". A person with a healthy mind will at least work a minimum wage job and rent modest accommodation. They will utilize shelters and community help to get back on their feet. A person with untreated schizophrenia will never be able to hold down employment.

Ah, I didn't notice that. My bad. I still think asylums are a very dubious thing because if they are corrupted by politicians, they could just be turned into just another type of prison where people are left to rot. The horrors of the asylums back in the 50s and 60s come to mind.

...and once asylums are opened, they can be abused by politicians & insurance corpos to throw even remotely mentally challenged people in them (like me!) to rot away out of sight! Who needs pesky reintegration? Out of sight, out of mind. OR, and hear me out here: thebetter.news/housing-firs...

thebetter.newsFinland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.meIn Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.

Elected representatives and homeless advocates need to work on solutions that don't include people living in parks designated for recreation or on public walkways. Private property has no duty to allow uninvited persons to live on their property. It shouldn't be an either/or.
