During a LONG power outage due to extreme weather, I asked Grandma how she managed everything without power ‘back in the day’. “Honey, taking care of daily things was my only job. I didn’t have to leave to do that. We fixed things that broke and grew or hunted our food. It was a better time.” Truth!

In some ways it was better and in some ways it was worse. Many died because we didn’t have the medicines or technology to save them. And it was back-breaking grinding work in many cases to maintain a roof over one’s head.

Absolutely true. The /birth/death/marriage records from that area/time were horrifying. My aunt contracted rheumatic fever from a creek. Spent her life in pain & endured many surgeries. I think her point was that she had tough stuff to do, but also didn’t have to go to a job on top of it all.
