I see a huge opportunity for how the AT Protocol could reshape academic publishing. Imagine researchers publishing continuously and atomically — before, during, and after research projects — in public connected continuous streams of discovery and insight.

Some notes on how we can make Leaflet more useful for scientists and academic communities — touching on things like annotation, standalone doc publishing, new block types, post reactions, references & backlinks… Second in a series, and intended as a living doc — we'd love to hear your thoughts!

This protocol has the potential to turn research into an open conversation — not a gated archive with peaks of occasional information releases. It would protect ownership, credit, and integrity while 100X the time to the next big discovery or paradigm shift. (A new home/model for preprints?)

Publishing atomically through the AT Protocol could let researchers build and share work across their entire careers — transparently, collaboratively, and safely — without fear of being scooped or losing rights. (A viable replacement for ORCID?)

More than any emergent tech I’ve seen in the past decade, I believe the AT Protocol has the right foundational elements to make this real: open standards, interoperability, collaboration, and individual ownership, all in the DNA.

Verifiable identities, the PDS, shared lexicons for documents, data, and soon maybe peer review and indexing, plus labelers and moderation lists to surface quality, uphold research integrity, mitigate bad actors, and feeds to support discovery.

The pieces are all here, and improving, and plain to see. The momentum is there. It feels like now’s the time to connect the dots and pull together the threads… to start experimenting and see what can happen next.

I don’t know all the answers, but I would love to collect together/ join with others exploring how we can design shared tools and spaces for open, continuous research authoring, curation, dissemination and consumption.

This speed to progress is one of the core values of the ThomasKuhnFoundation.org who I work with. We want to meet folks eager to maximise this opportunity, through collaboration, exploration, contribution of time, knowledge, sweat and funding. Who knows what is possible! We can just do things.

Where are these conversations happening? Who’s leading them? How can we bring them together, get involved, and move things forward? Who’s already working on this? And how can I help?

I would love to brainstorm with you a bit. We are running a scientific content standards workshop at the end of next week. Would you by chance have a small amount of time early next week to chat?

I think we should dogfood from day 1 by starting The International Journal of Authenticated Takes. We accept publications in multiple lexica that are AT-relevant, and we publish as a peer-review overlay journal.
