I don't agree with the translation though, the insertion of the definite article changes the meaning.

Genuine question: What would have been your translation?

My German's only good enough for a literal translation, so I can easily miss implications. But in English that translates directly to "I eat all potatoes" - which could mean "all of the potatoes" or "all types of potatoes". One is rather less confrontational.
