Our founding fathers were human and flawed. Washington, Franklyn and others speculated on land west of the Appalachian Mountains, where land was set aside for indigenous tribes by the British. They got rich off of it.

Jefferson collected dinosaur fossils himself and funded fossil research by western explorers. He was fascinated by evidence of prehistoric life, though notions of 'dinosaurs' were still very hazy.
