as an artist who draws commissions, i'll take "badly" scribbled pencil sketches on lined paper over a¡ generated references ANY DAY OF THE WEEK

What if someone gives you an example in prose, would you consider that as a reference. Some people have no privacy to draw and art to meek to share their ideas with other people in the room.

I never understood the vitriolic hatred some artists have had for drawing on lined paper. It's just half a grid. Near-perfect parallel lines that can help you if you worked with them.

For sure! Heck, if I can't do shitty little sketch of what I'm picturing (like a pose), I'll take picture of myself in a pose and send that as a ref (did that for a recent D&D char com). One of my favorite pieces I commissioned I used MS paint to draw a pose and got a great piece of art in return:

There are a lot of bases out there, made by artists to give you something to work off of. Also, a lot of artists who MAKE ref-sheets work off of descr. or talk with you about things; I had a concept for a dragon in mind, sketched something and talked with the artist about her colors and details :)

My tattoo artist was so appreciative of my quick, janky 5 minute sketch for my newest tattoo because it gave him a really good starting place to know exactly how I wanted things along with the written description✌️ Even stick figures create a composition to build off of

I LOVE getting sketches from commissioners. It helps so much to know exactly what they have in mind for a pose/layout. Cause sometimes it's not 100% clear, ever with a bunch of references. That, and they always look amazing and bring me so much joy to see. Esp the stick figures. ♡

the way I understand the badly scribbled pencil sketches that commissioners provide me to give me an idea of what they want over what AI generally pumps out is funny. Trust me!! With communication, it is NOT hard to figure out what you want in the commission!! Don't use AI!!

The amount of times, in regards to figuring out a pose or what a character has feature-wise, and the commissioner sends me a stick figure doing their best to accurately depict it, i've still the majority of the time end up figuring it out! I don't think people realise how informative doodles CAN be

if you give me rough sketches for refs, we can talk it through and work out the details if you give me a¡ gen refs, the message you're accidentally sending is that you think art is utterly worthless

"but i can't draw" "but my art is chicken scratch" i need you to know that never in a million years would i judge you for something you created with your own hands, something you plucked from your beautiful mind and turned into something real. i will always, ALWAYS respect and appreciate the effort

I’m never calling image generation bots AI. An actual AI could at least SEE what it is doing and do the most artistic thing of all; redoing something because they’re not satisfied with what was made.

I tell this to just about everyone irl! I do a lot of sketches in public, so I get that comment a lot. Thankfully, I've seen quite a few people turn around and start making art after seeing mine and I love and encourage their art so much!

As a graphic designer i often get ai references and it bothers me so much because I can't tell if they want me to copy the polished slop style or not. It's not rough enough to be a reference
