Oh say, can’t you see? By the Don’s surly might What we hailed at the dawn of this perilous age, Whose loud boasts and crude threats, through the long, anxious night, O’er the halls of our law cast a tyrant’s dark shade. 1/

And the courts’ early cries, and the truth’s muffled plea, Gave grim proof through the storm that our guard was too thin; Oh say, does that banner yet tattered still be, O’er the land of the free, and the home we’re still in? 2/

On the shore, dimly seen through the fog of deceit, Where the echoes of norms lie abandoned and worn, What is that which the mob, in their fevered retreat, Half conceals, half exalts with a sneer and a scorn? 3/

Now it catches the gleam of a fact-checking light, Now it fades as the lie takes the crowd once again; ’Tis the charter we swore would outlast any blight— Can it stand, can it hold, through this trial of men? 4/

And where is that vow that our founders once spoke, That no crown nor strongman would rule by his whim? Their ink has not faded, though tested and broke By the hands of the craven who profit from him. 5/

A power drunk on rage shall no refuge secure, From the judgment of time or the people awake; For the union betrayed can be mended once more If we dare what is hard for our children’s sake. 6/

Oh thus be it ever, when free folk shall stand Between despot and dusk, between silence and fear; Blest with conscience and courage, we’ll steady our hand, Pay the cost, speak the truth, make the danger draw near. 7/

Then the star-spangled banner, through effort and strain, Shall yet wave, not by chance, but by choice, brave and free— O’er the land that we save, not again but again, And the home of the bold, if we choose so to be. 8/8
