This has been Google's game for years, since well before LLMs. They treat any independent source of information as a bug which needs crushing. Want a solution that's better than just hoping that everyone just switches (which is hard)? I've got you covered: ftw.fund.

ftw.fundFunding The Web: A Wise ChoiceThe Web is slow-motion collapsing for multiple reasons, but at the heart of it all is a little known system: the Search/Browser Levy. Let's fix it!

Google is transforming Search from a list of links into an AI-powered experience filled with conversational answers, autonomous agents, and interactive interfaces — a shift that could further reduce traffic to publishers across the web.

"Do you really expect the companies formerly known as Facebook, Twitter, Google & (still) Apple or overseas advertisers to play ball and pay a tax or levy to keep local journalists & artists employed?" [ bsky.app/profile/nzhe... ] Why not just relegate those platforms to Myspace like history?

🧵1/n It depends on what you want to do with the instance of the platform. Although it could & probably should be done incrementally, there are fundamental changes to meet need & wants for what I think would be beneficial for the users & countries adopting it.

On toxic platforms: Signal your favour for less toxic platforms, driving people there to to follow replies & engage: ▪️ "Posted first on My Website & Bluesky N hours ago."; ▪️ "I respond to direct messages much quicker on Bluesky."; ▪️"This platform limits what I can post/reply..."; 🔗➡️ #BlueskyFirst

1. Just get all the NZ New Media & other New Zealand websites to replace their website "Share Via Twitter/X" buttons with "Share via Bluesky" buttons. 2. Make staff use less toxic platforms FIRST 🔗➡️ #BlueskyFirst #nzpol

reading the report now, this looks so cool! i have many questions that will probably be answered by the document, but also do you have any process writing about this kind of work?

both on process! i assume you had to pitch to the digital infrastructures impact fund, but you'd have had an idea/direction by then? i think my main question is how you propose we turn the screws on industry/browser companies when the legal route has "failed" (maybe pessimistic of me)?

Yeah, they open calls regularly, I pitched, and they liked it! I already had a good idea of the problem (though not how bad it was!) and direction of the solution, but it needed research on precedents, etc. It's not a method per se but: I know things can be better and other industries do better.
