My friends have previously done kitchen stuff, towels or sheets, gift cards. So it can kinda be whatever you want. I don't think any of your friends would bat an eye if there was a MTG box of something. The rule of thumb I have heard before is to put things that are nice to have but not needed.

i did not do one but having bought from one once, put something fun on there. it was a friend of mine from high school and there was a nerf blaster on their registry between all the usual housewares etc.
