“Department officials … said they have rejected nearly as many applicants as they have hired, 126.” Not even a 1 to 1 rejection to acceptance ratio? In the past, it’s probably been more like 100 to 1.

“Department officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters, said they have rejected nearly as many applicants as they have hired, 126.” A 50% acceptance rate is not particularly selective. My dog is pickier about treats.
