if you made art this year, you did well. a sketch, even if it was scrapped ; a poem, even if it was deleted — mattered. you put thought to paper, you engaged with the creative alchemy of turning feeling to something tangible. doesn't matter if you weren't productive "enough." or good "enough."

I worked on inventing a scarf pattern using thrift store yarn $1 a skein and a dozen scarves came out pretty well. I loved a book and decided to write a fan fiction novel in response and typed out 200 pages. Now. I. Know. I Can do That.

I've wrote more this year than maybe the last five together, 99% of it being freeform, play-by-post roleplaying. I don't feel like I'm progressing much, but I don't really care, I'm happy and I made a good friend ♥

I noticed how little art I made this year...my 2023 folder had 65 pieces..My 2024 folder? Only 2 pieces. I felt so bad, but this post helps a lot. I think we've all been there <3

thank u! I'm very excited for a new art journey in 2025 :D Something I had to learn is that even failure is part of the progress ^_^ Improvement is not a stagnant line.

Thank you for this thread. There’s times when I look back at my year’s work and find myself disappointed I wasn’t more productive. The worst thing that happened to creatives in the Age of Social Media is the need to feed the algorithm. I am not a “content creator” or a machine.

I understand that. I routinely step back from my social media outlets. They’re exhausting sometimes. If it becomes a chore to make and post art in order to make headway, we’ve lost the point of creative expression. 💚

Thank you for this thread. I only had enough spoons this year to make exactly one art. But it raised enough money to lift an old high school friend out of an abusive relationship and gave her a fresh start, so I’m gonna rest until I have spoons again without beating myself up for a lack of spoons.

Create art and doesn’t listen to anyone else! I’ve been waiting for decades for family to compliment my drawings, or see the beauty in them, but if only I see it, that’s what counts. I’m no brilliant artist. But I do love to create.

maybe you didn't have enough artwork to fill the "art summary" board, maybe you didn't have enough published writing to engage with a "share your most popular work" trend. but you made it and stand now on the precipice of another day, another year. we don't need constant evidence of your magic.

and let it be said that it's never "too late" for you. maybe you lost your ability, mentally or physically, to create this year ; it doesn't need to be a life sentence. we are not owed backpay for your hard weeks, months, years. there's no "catching up." just create. live, rest, and create.

I needed this. I went from making the most extravagant ink drawings frequently, to only doing calligraphy and writing. I’ve gotten subtle judgement since it’s not as “magnificent”, and I get asked “do you draw anymore”. Some even imply Im no longer an artist not understanding the diversity of art.

This was a tough year for me, creatively, but I found pockets of time to make things. Just started learning to weave and got back into chainmaille. Made pretty good progress on a quilt too.

I treated myself to a set of watercolour pencils... I've been very curious to try... No goal in mind... After playing, i was gonna bin it, but when I walked past the table & saw it upside down, I was like... ooh... I like it! Even a fail, with fresh eyes and a different perspective is valid!
