to me, “you should create for yourself” and “you deserve to be acknowledged for what you make” are two statements that should coexist. chasing engagement will rot your soul, while being neglected will see your passion wither. loving what you make is a failsafe for when the engagement never comes.

I see art making like hosting a dinner. I cook my favorite dishes with my favorite ingredients. I prepare the table, I open my doors. people complimenting my food fills me with joy. it inspires me to host another dinner. but when no one shows, which isn’t uncommon, I still have my favorite food.

it’s really as simple as not being discouraged when the accolades don’t come, when the people never show up to eat your food or even worse, spit it out when they taste it. you have to be confident in your abilities, in your visions. fall in love with your work, it only sweetens the engagement.

Surviving the void is the greatest test of a creative. Can you have fun alone, and can you enjoy that silence enough to keep doing it regardless of if anybody shows up or not.

I draw for myself. I make what I want to see. It brings me immense joy. When someone compliments my effort, I smile so much and for so long that my face hurts and it makes me want to make even more! Affirmation isn’t the point, but it sure is nice!
