I feel like a lot of people think about time wrong. Been bugging me since I talked about side projects the other day and was complaining about it. I had to remind myself that at no point in my adult life has time been given to me, or materialised out of nowhere. You have to actively create time.

(Talking to myself here) If you want to ship some side project, it is on you to create the time for that to happen in. Similarly, new productivity tools don’t mean more time is going to become available. Never has, never will. The world will find more work for you. That’s the way gravity pulls.

You have to resist that pull and invest energy into making sure you have the time to do the things you want to do. So I annoyed myself when I said “I don’t have time” because it’s not true. I didn’t make the time. Me. Through my decisions. I should have said “I haven’t made the time yet.”

Sorry if you weren't looking for a reply here, but I've found this to be only partially true self-talk that puts a lot of pressure on oneself. If people were to do an honest time audit, my guess is that most of them would find that they're oversubscribed, even by the non-negotiable parts of life.

Especially if they took their energy levels into account. Work, Kids, Food, Friends, Relationships, Health, Sleep, Admin, Overhead will very quickly fill up the 168 hours we have in any given week, and achieving any extra-curriculars will only be possible if we are able to make these negotiable.

Not saying you're not aware of this, and you know your own life better than I do of course. Just wanted to say to you and everyone else reading this: don't be so hard on yourself. Be really honest about where your time needs to go, and about how much you're already achieving. It's probably a lot!

Even taking that into account, it is squarely on me to do something about it. It does no good to surrender to life’s demands and be miserable. Gotta do something about it.
