I don't think the "Hotness" setting has to be ascribed to nefariousness; Bluesky can be hard for newskies to navigate and that setting can help the site seem livelier, and yes, social media sites need engagement to live. BUT, this doesn't mean the setting can't (and won't) be manipulated.

I think it’s well-established that mere amplification of post engagement is sufficient to drive extremism, because it’s the highly emotional posts that get shared and liked. I really REALLY like the idea of not prioritizing posts in any way that would produce positive feedback loops.

I would still love to have "like" mean something ... maybe give me a setting to control whether I see what people I follow like, but I would like the following feed to show me what people I follow like.

Enshittification doesn’t require nefariousness though. I think the reason it’s a common pattern is it’s the result of a lot of small decisions, most of which make sense locally for benign reasons like “this will boost engagement and we need engagement to live.”

How? It's a very simple algorithm and the only "knob" you can turn is like, same as before. It's actually far less gameable than the previous default which favored early responses with no time decay. And newest or random just generate bad experiences. What's the downside?
