I found this interview extremely informative. bsky.app/profile/jool...
For a good explainer about what's at stake, listen to this week's New Yorker radio hour which features @agawande.bsky.social, formerly global health head at USAID. www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/tny...
“The specific countries where we estimate the largest number of lives saved are Nigeria and South Africa, both at around 150,000 lives saved per year from US foreign aid, almost entirely due to PEPFAR support for HIV/AIDS in South Africa’s case, and largely so in Nigeria [...]”
“we estimate the cancelled awards represent somewhere over 34 percent of USAID programming. And notably, “life-saving” program areas like maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis are not spared from major cuts.”
And we have as yet barely begun to reckon with the addutional lives that will be lost to TB! (See gift link.) I really appreciate your posts & reposts, Saloni, so I'm following you. Check out my daily 🧵of editorial cartoons, pinned to my profile, to see if you want to follow me back.
