Look obviously a lil guy in a room with a bunch of lookup tables in a language he can't understand doesn't form a sentient system, but if the lil guy speaks Chinese? hot damn then maybe we're onto something

guy who thinks the Chinese Room as a system is conscious with respect to the outside world but that the dude inside the room may as well be a p-zombie ...wait, i think that's my actual view, shit

The version of the Chinese Room I know is the one with a lookup table of rules, and my thought was that if the lookup table existed in real life, it'd have to be compressed in some custom way, which would make the "lookup table" conscious

Didn't realize Searle's argument was with the human doing the computation. Of course that system would be conscious too? What does Searle even think a mind *is* other than information which the system *has*? Incredibly silly argument

i guess i agree with Searle that the guy in the room doesn't understand Chinese. but also he doesn't *need* to, because i think the combined system knows Chinese. and if the room operator memorizes the rules, the persona *of the system* doesn't have the guy's qualia, so they're different entities

yeah, this trivially resolves itself as soon as you even *vaguely* define a mind and what makes a mind different from another. The replies section on wikipedia is just Searle going "absurd!" after reductively imagining anything
