The reason not to call AI "clankers" is not because you'll hurt the AI's feelings (they don't have those) but because it reveals you to be the kind of person who will use a slur if you think you can get away with it. Your minoritized friends will see it and note it.

With all due respect, suggesting "clanker" is a slur *is* humanizing the software. If you said this about using a derigatory term in regard to any other inanimate object you would sound equally goofy. If I don't like the texture or mashed peas and call it "goop", that doean't make goop a slur.

I don't know about that word so won't engage w/it until I can read up on the origins or why people are using it. Are there pejorative terms that would be acceptable to use when describing it w/o being problematic? Like, would 'knowledge slurping machine' carry similar problems?

I guess without knowing the meaning behind the term I am trying to understand if there are terms that could be used that while expressing a critique, aren't slurs in the same way presumably this term is?

I mean, u can angrily call it "useless pile of wires" if you want, how u could call someone a "useless pile of bones" w/o it being a slur. Also no one is listening to what you say at home in private. It's when ur gleefully parodying other real slur words in public w/ other people that it gets weird

I may just be out of the loop on the origins and usages then. Is it one of those terms that has been co-opted by bigots but pre-existed in some other context? I can’t remember the name of that process.

I think it's fine to call LLMs mean things if you don't like them. I think gleefully adopting a specific term expressly as a slur sends a message about how you feel about slurs in general. It's not about AI, it's about other people who are the subjects of slurs.

So say I am frustrated and call my newly purchased fridge a 'pile'. How would that be distinct from the term you used (given that I don't actually know the history of it)? Genuinely trying to understand what makes the term you mentioned a slur vs just some term to express frustration at a tool?

The term has been introduced and circulated specifically as a slur. "This is the slur we just invented, you should use it!" is how it has made the rounds.
