The whole fucking point of taking notes during a lecture is to retain information. The act of writing it down, processing it, etc. turns what you hear into knowledge. It is infinitely depressing how quickly people have sacrificed their cognition to a piece of technology. Wake up. FFS.

in 1st year, i recorded lectures so i could listen back to them, but i retained none of the information. from 2nd year onwards i took notes and things improved significantly

I think about this every time I'm in a Zoom-based workshop and all the note-taking bots show up in the chat. What good does that do? They already have a replay and transcript if you need to revisit something. Robo notes won't help you process or retain anything.
