The part that is most concerning (at least, imo) about the PlayStation ordeal is that it will give Sony and publishers near-complete control over pricing. There are a lot (seriously, A LOT) of games that you can find secondhand that are *massively* cheaper than the same game on digital stores.

People who are saying this harms preservation are worried about the wrong thing. Preservation of digital-only games will continue the same way it has in the past with both physical and digital games (largely, by a word starting with P and related to skulls and crossbones).

However, if you want to legally play a PlayStation title in 2028, your *only choice* (outside of gray-market key resellers) will be Sony's price. That is a new problem, and the real story here.

Hopefully there will still be interest in consoles(and thus console hacking)at that point;you guys have the DSi a second life, the 2013 Xbox got the perfect exploit with the bliss hack and AFAIK people seem to care even less than about the Wii U😭 A lot of preservation happens by circumstance also...

I still have some preservation concerns, since there are cases of digital-only games being lost and not even the PS3 has had its full library archived, and preservation usually requires modding the consoles which who knows when/if that’ll happen But yeah as a normal user this monopoly is WAY WORSE
