I quoted some snippets from a solid explanation of some of the new discoveries DeepSeek made here simonwillison.net/2025/Jan/27/...
Interesting to see potential for the model to talk itself out of updating code when reasoning "But I'm still a bit confused about how to handle this comprehensively. Maybe looking at examples would help, but since the user is asking for code, perhaps writing pseudo-code first could guide me better."
LLMs have been great at writing code for a couple of years now - it's one of their greatest strengths So far it seems to be helping programmers become more valuable, because it lets us do more stuff I've been tracking that here: simonwillison.net/tags/ai-assi...
That's quantization: it's a trick where you effectively drop the number of figures after the floating point to shrink the overall size of the model, but it comes at a quality cost simonwillison.net/2024/Nov/23/...
I tried the same medium-complexity Python rewriting prompt against both R1 and o1 and I think R1 did a better job of it - added some notes about that to my post simonwillison.net/2025/Jan/27/...
I asked it to write a Python module in Rust on Saturday, had it done and on PyPI by Sunday. I don't know Rust! pypi.org/project/json...
Wow, that looks pretty sophisticated! The GitHub repo is 404ing right now, it might still be private? github.com/Media-Platfo...
That repo is public now – the code is still in github.com/Media-Platfo...
Quick question: Have you heard any news about the MCP proposal (modelcontextprotocol.io) since it was announced? Is anyone doing anything similar?
That's been a trend over the past year - it turns out there was a LOT of low hanging fruit with regards to performance optimization in how these things work, and there's still more improvements to come I wrote a bit about that here: simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/31/...
I ran my example there directly against the version of the model hosted on the Groq API, skipping their harness entirely gist.github.com/simonw/5a3ac...
