Counterpoint to this... I would happily pay $50/month for an atproto-based Bluesky clone that promises "no ads, ever" as long as it was interoperable. So anyone who is building that, just know that you've got at least some customers waiting, especially if you refuse to take VC money.

I won't mince words, the day Bluesky rolls out ads is the day that I make this place syndication only and stop hanging out here, and then plot an exit entirely from the platform within 6 months after that. It'd be a broken promise, in *any* form. bsky.app/profile/zipp...

Remember a platform like that long time ago but don’t remember the name, just died. I think those kind of platform don’t go anywhere

That's generally true! Did it have the same architecture of Bluesky though? If not, can't compare. (To be clear I do *not* assume subscriptions would be self-sustaining... they'd just narrow the gap some)

It was similar to twitter but for tech people, or that was the idea. I remember you had to pay around 9 dollars. I think was this one en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/App.net

Vaguely remember that one. Subscriptions alone definitely isn't a complete model for a large scale platform.
