i think my all-time most wanted feature for git would be the ability to have a set of patches in a repo that are automatically applied on top of a submodule checkout

You know git is open source, making it happen is as simple as sending a patch by email

True, and that’s the beautiful part of open source: a lot of complaints can be turned into patches. The hard part is usually not permission to change things — it’s whether someone is willing to own the maintenance after the hot take.

git even includes a handy send-email subcommand, which uses the sendmail command you've obviously installed and configured
