Okay a tiny thread because people are going to freak out: This exploit in particular takes advantage of a special command that renders images (via attribute escape). If you have an overlay that processes images (most don't) then yes, this is your problem. Overlay must explicitly create img DOM.

that is correct, the OFFICIAL chat dock in OBS sanitizes user text. idk if any third parties hook into that and like to fuck with it, but the official one (the default) sanitizes.

Okay, whew. I was terrified. I'm using frankly ancient copies of OBS nvidia drivers because I'm afraid of trying to install a new one (my laptop has had issues that seem to be tied to video) and new OBS requires a version higher than what I've got. Restream.io's chat dock (no overlay) is fine too?

I have not personally used their chat dock, but according to their developer docs, it appears they sanitize all messages for you automatically. Meaning it would be safe. You can try the test messages in the reply I made with the github link. Those will tell you 100%

developers.restream.ioChat API — Event Types | RestreamDecode incoming Restream chat messages: this reference covers every event type — text, super chats, super stickers, memberships, and subscriptions — and what each payload contains.

problem here (and why the folks maintaining OBS can't do a thing to fix it) is that this depends entirely on exploiting a bot. if you're using a bot's !image command (that it processes un-sanitized) then you're going to be affected. Otherwise this Claude-ster fuck of script kiddie code is useless.

Wanted to ask for some clarification on the tests, on the first test I'm using a Streamelements overlay and i just got an empty chat bubble (color didn't change) and for the second test just the raw text appeared, is this a good sign?

That’s kinda suspicious. If it just shows the raw code then you are fine, but the entire thing being gone could mean it’s being sinked (bad) or there’s custom overlay code filtering it out (good). Try a chat message that is <b>test</b> See what your output is.

Just tested it with the <b>test</b> using a thin font weight and thickness (font used: Inria Sans) as far as I can tell the text didn't bold but I don't see the raw text. Unfortunately I don't remember where I got the HTML code for this customized overlay so I'm disabling this one.

has to be the overlay, if it's in chat, ignore. You only should care if the overlays change color or reload themselves. If they do, you are affected, if not, you are not affected.

Thank you for giving all this context! So if I'm hearing it right, if I have links disabled I won't be effected by this? I don't have links enabled anyway by default thankfully.

With your current widgets, yes. If the test code in the link in one of the replies I made above ends up not doing anything, you're totally safe. But the link disable feature _technically_ will break the injection code. But those tests will tell you 100% tho.

run the commands in the link in this post. if nothing happens, you are safe. if stuff happens, you need overlay updates. the obs update will only patch someone taking over your pc, would not stop someone from doing something funny like post images all over your screen.

To make it easier, here's a dirty check if your overlay does suffer from regular injection by pasting the attached message into a twitch chat. If your chat overlay no longer has a transparent background and/or reloads (after 1 second or immediately), then it is affected.
