"The thing that worries me is that we're being pushed toward self-sufficiency at exactly the same time that it seems to be getting harder to build a sustainable independent career that isn’t dictated by the whims of tech companies and social media algorithms."

"We talk a lot about why people tend to gravitate towards the same knitting patterns, the same books, the same creators... it’s a natural consequence of there just being so many choices that we need something to help us decide, so we tend to focus on what is popular to narrow down our options."

The takeaway is that the days of simply being online is no longer enough to make a creative career possible. It is now a crowded market all using the same playbook. This is a big part of what I'll be covering in my Marketing for Furry Creators panel on Wednesday at BLFC (and afterwards online).

It doesn't mean you need a marketing department OR that you need to spend all your time building an audience rather than creating. But if you DO want to try to monetize your creative skills in any meaningful way you can no longer rely on your creations to sell themselves.
