Thank you!! I think I was inspired by how a lot of Japanese art around the late 1980s/early 1990s would use the white of the paper for the highlights. Not really as common a shading style these days, unfortunately

Its a bit sad that traditional art as a whole is dying out. Digital is 1000x more convinient yes, but learning traditional just improves your skill so much. When you have limited resources (i.e. only a few markers instead of the whole color wheel) you make workarounds that are unique.
