what's the deal with the branded strings- i don't get the appeal. its mostly just confusing to consumers and seems like it doesn't have any use case. what is anyone going to do with a .salesforce tld??

There is some legitimacy in a defense against phishing and typosquatting. Anyone can buy salesfroce dot com, but ICANN won’t hand out dot salesfroce. But you’re really only getting the benefits if you’re using it inside a company and training people on it.
