it is something i hit on a lot, that of the many, many bad reasons all the internet regulation stuff is aimed at kids instead of actual companies, CEOs, the ones actually doing harm - is it's cuz kids don't have any political power and can't do shit about it. they're a 'no cost' target here.

Of course, the inconvenient part is that it relies on kids not remembering who treated them like that once they're old enough to vote... which you'd think wouldn't exactly be a smart prospect for a party that relies so much on the youth vote. But I guess that's why I'm not a politician!

These regulations aren't really "aimed at kids" in the first place. Like pretty much all "think of the children!" moral panics, the concept of children's safety is just cover for the latest nanny state crackdown.

with other groups, even if you grant the assumption that these electeds want to do something about them, they can actually push back in various ways, some more than others. kids, of course, can't even vote on what's being done 'for' them here. no vote, no money, punishing them costs nothing.

goes far beyond the internet too, it's all the things that lead to here. everything in response to school shootings that was ultimately just stuffing schools with cops who can and do brutalize and exploit the kids. or gang panic and loitering laws that cracked down on youth public existence.

whatever ill is afflicting kids, none of the actions are taken to affect *adults*, especially powerful ones, and what they do with kids, because they can push back on it, they can do something about it. it's always targeted at limiting what the *kids* can do, because they have no influence here.

you can say you're 'doing something' while risking nothing. the kids have no lobbyist, they have no vote, they have no money, they got nothing. all they can do is just sort of sit there and take it and hope maybe some adult stops it or reverses it. no power, no influence. a cheap target.
