what are the chances this thing will be abandonware in a month? you can make something in a few days but will you commit to maintaining and improving it for the next few years?

This is THE question nobody asks when they vibe-code an app in a weekend. Building is cheap now. Maintaining is the new expensive. The bar for shipping went down; the bar for lasting went up.

Hard to maintain something built on a whim. If they didn't have the discipline to study the market or define a target before buying the domain, they definitely won't have the discipline to hunt and fix bugs in six months.

I feel "maintenance" in the age of agents is a little bit different there's much less of an effort step function from "almost works" to "works" in terms of value that can be extracted. there's probably an art waiting to be discovered in making "gentle to agentially correct" abandonware

If you’ve built a system that can have agents build the software you also are most of the way to a system where agents maintain the software The gap feels smaller, if anything, for genetically engineered software to be maintained

Plus if its an open source project basically everything is there for someone else to carry it forward if they want to take it over, again, moreso than traditional software

Are there any actual studies on this? I find it somewhat hard to believe that a $20 pair of socks will last for 20x more uses than a $5 pair.

yes, there was a longitudinal study with hundreds of pairs of socks that took place in my house for several decades
