It is but people are sometimes bad and the grocers are improving the self-checkout technology so that this is not as big of an issue as with transit fares. Wegman’s now has cameras above the stations and has gotten a lot better and figuring out what you’re buying.

I mean yeah, or we could push to ban corporate stores. Walmart, Amazon, and/or Kroger shouldn’t be allowed to kill our local economy to monopolize our communities. No company should be so big that any community is completely reliant upon it.

My great-grandfather was killed because the communists in Vrancea County seized the local gold dealer’s receipt book and found out he had some, and then he wouldn’t give up my grandmother (who he’d given it to) when they tried to seize it. Consumer privacy has historically not been that strong.

And it’s the same with transit. You get fare beating down by buying state-of-the-art gates and improving the productivity of proof-of-payment inspections, not through hectoring. Though ultimately the system is managed politically, so the no-bedtime caucus needs to be defeated discursively.

I'm guessing the "drastic results" you're referring to resulted in much reduced fare gate jumping? I'm out of the loop on this.
