I don't have a strong opinion on the matter, but find it interesting how the adoption of fire sprinklers has led to such a dramatic decline in fire fatalities that many of the old fire prevention techniques (like corridor/ elevator compartmentalization or dual stairs) can be called into question.

I recall meeting with a former fire chief turned lobbyist who remarked that a certain feature was unnecessary since he couldn't remember a single instance in his 30 year career of having it matter.
