One weird thing is that I always assumed, like many, that digitalization was preservation But it’s easier to `pkill nginx` than it is to burn down a library

I’ve heard from an extremely reliable source that the entire National Center for Education Statistics is **gone**

We should radically expand the mission of archive.gov when there's the chance. This confligration cannot happen again. bsky.app/profile/jaun...

All this book burning by regex insanity wouldn't feel quite quite so awful if we did the right thing & had almost all publications flowing naturally to the national archives. The archives should be a work to preserve and maintain, that reflects the states of the State to us. This is what gov was.

I think the trade-off is that digitization makes things easier to copy, but the individual copies are much less durable. Digitization also enables making works that are harder to copy because interactive features complicate things.

The resilience of digital data lies in backups, and the ease with which we can create them. Can't `pkill nginx` on thousands of devices at once so easily. Add some cryptographic signing for verification, and you'll even get a proof of authenticity (as far as the source of it can be trusted).

Though I still agree, some data should be stored in a more physical form. Airgapped storage devices are closest to that, but that still deals with all the downsides of fragile digital data (but it's also easier to work with as a benefit).
